Market Eggs- Packaging Innovation
Egg packaging innovation
Brief: Identify a packaging problem or issue that currently exists for today’s consumers and develop a packaging solution to overcome this problem.
For this brief I focused on sustainability and the redesigning of the egg carton. While the current carton is made from paper and wood based waste material, this is a process that still requires the felling of trees and the attribution of land. Egg cartons made from paper waste can not be further recycled because the pulp is considered to be at the end of it’s recyclable process. Conversely wood-free paper, which this project utilises, is made from agricultural waste and is a by-product of the farming industry; material that at the moment is being either burned or re-plowed into the field. NSW rice farmers alone burn 600,000 metric tonnes of rice straw each year.
The final design can be transported flat and assembled by the distributor. The carton features ample room for greater shelf presence and the colour variance indicates small, medium and large. The design takes into account customer interaction with the eggs being clearly viable without having to open the package. Made to accommodate four eggs, this package is also a solution for the consumer who may want to purchase less eggs then current packaging allows.
